My Story
Like so many kids, I fell in love with Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague. I read those stories over and over, and I begged my parents for a whole year to take me to Chincoteague Island. When they finally did, it was everything I'd dreamed of, and I've been going back ever since.
When I got home from that first trip, I sat down and wrote Marguerite a letter. Thirty pages long! I told her all about the island, the ponies, and how much her books meant to me.
A little while later, I came home to a blinking light on our answering machine. I pressed play, and it was Marguerite Henry herself, calling to invite me over for dinner! It turned out she lived less than 30 minutes away.
“For six years she mentored me, and she challenged me to carry on where she had left off.”
That phone message became a friendship that lasted the rest of her life. Some of my fondest memories are Sunday dinners at Marguerite's Southern California home, with her poodle Patrick nearby.
Writing these books is how I keep my promise to her. Nightmist The Miracle Pony, The Forgotten Pony and BrokenJaw are my stories of the Chincoteague ponies, carrying on the legend she started, and there are more on the way.
